Nuclos ERP

Nuclos is a German low-code ERP platform developed by Novabit Informationssysteme GmbH from Augsburg. The product blends a runnable standard ERP — covering order management, purchasing, warehouse, light manufacturing and finance — with an integrated low-code customisation environment, so customers can shape the system to their specific processes much further than a typical fixed-scope standard ERP allows. The vendor positions Nuclos for the Mid-Market — the German term for the mid-market SMB segment — in machinery and plant engineering, electrical engineering, wholesale, testing and certification, and project services.

Functional scope

Nuclos covers the typical Mid-Market process map. Order management handles quotes, sales orders, invoices and case management with status history. Purchasing covers RFQs, purchase orders and incoming-goods. Warehouse and inventory cover multi-warehouse stock, batches and serials. Light production covers BOMs and routings. Finance covers AR, AP and general ledger basics, usually paired with DATEV exports rather than being used as the primary book of record. CRM, document management and a customisable case-management layer round out the standard product.

Low-code platform

The differentiator is the integrated low-code platform. Customers can extend data models, build new forms, define workflows, generate reports and add business logic without forking the codebase — updates remain backward-compatible. For Mid-Market customers with idiosyncratic processes, this is materially less risky than the alternative of either (a) deploying a rigid standard ERP and reverse-engineering the company around it, or (b) commissioning a bespoke development from scratch and inheriting the maintenance cost.

Technology and deployment

Nuclos runs on a Java back-end with a relational database, typically PostgreSQL or Oracle, and offers a web client (also usable on mobile devices) plus a desktop rich client. The architecture is multi-tiered with clean separation of data, application logic and presentation. Deployment is flexible: self-hosted on-premise, customer-managed cloud or hosted by a Nuclos partner. There is no SaaS-style multi-tenant cloud offering — each customer runs their own instance, which matches the customisation depth the platform enables.

Nuclos is offered as a free open-source community edition and as a commercial enterprise edition with maintenance, support and additional functions. The community edition is freely usable and self-hostable; the enterprise edition adds advanced features, vendor support, structured implementation services and update paths. The cost of ownership for a real Mid-Market deployment is dominated by implementation, customisation and operations rather than licence fees — a pattern that holds across most open-source ERP options.

DACH localisation and selection

Nuclos handles DATEV export — DATEV is the German cooperative of tax advisors whose data format is the de facto standard for SME finance exchange — through configurable mappings, and supports GoBD-aligned audit-trail and archiving requirements (GoBD being the German principles for proper digital bookkeeping). ZUGFeRD and XRechnung e-invoicing are supported, which matters given Germany's phased B2B e-invoicing mandate. Nuclos competes with proAlpha, abas ERP and oxaion at the manufacturing-heavy end, with the broader open-source ERP options (ERPNext, Odoo, Dolibarr) where extensibility is the primary selection criterion, and with classical Mid-Market ERPs like Sage 100 where the buyer expects a fixed-scope product.

Best-fit customers are Mid-Market manufacturers and service businesses of 30 to 300 employees with idiosyncratic processes that would otherwise force expensive customisation in a fixed-scope ERP. Comparable vendors include ERPNext and Odoo in the open-source neighbourhood, plus abas ERP for variant-rich manufacturing. A review of open-source ERP trade-offs is recommended before shortlisting, since the licence-free aspect is typically misunderstood.
