Epicor ERP

Epicor ERP is the long-established umbrella name for the enterprise-resource-planning solutions of Epicor Software Corporation, headquartered in Austin, Texas. Founded in 1972 under the name Triad Systems, Epicor has grown into one of the world's leading providers of industry-specific business software, employing around 4,600 staff and serving primarily mid-market and large companies in manufacturing, distribution, building and construction supply, automotive and retail. Epicor ERP today stands for an entire product portfolio that has been consolidated in recent years into the modern flagship Epicor Kinetic, plus specialist products such as iScala, Prophet 21, BisTrack and Eclipse. The Epicor strategy is to digitalise industry-specific processes end-to-end, make supply chains transparent and enable customers to move into a connected, AI-supported industry. Several ownership changes — the current owner is the private-equity firm Clayton, Dubilier & Rice — have not changed the industry focus, which has been consistent for three decades and makes Epicor one of the most stable ERP players outside of SAP and Oracle.

Functional scope

The Epicor product family covers the full ERP stack across financials, supply chain, manufacturing, distribution, projects, services and HR, with depth particularly in manufacturing-specific workflows: order-driven, make-to-order, configure-to-order, and project manufacturing; integrated configurator (CPQ); MES with shop-floor data capture and machine integration; quality management; maintenance and asset management. Within distribution, Prophet 21 addresses durable-goods wholesale and Eclipse covers electrical, plumbing and HVAC wholesale. In retail and building supply, Eagle for Retail and BisTrack serve home improvement, lumber yards and specialty distribution. The flagship Kinetic platform supersedes the older Epicor 10 / Epicor ERP product as the primary path for new deployments in discrete manufacturing.

Target audience and industries

The primary target is mid-market and large discrete manufacturers — typically 50 to 5,000 employees — with complex product structures and frequently international sites. Epicor names machinery and plant engineering, metalworking, electronics and high-tech, aerospace and defence, automotive, medical devices, furniture industry and industrial component and specialist fabricators as key sectors. For distribution, trade and construction Epicor maintains its own products (Prophet 21, BisTrack, Eagle for Retail), so the Epicor ERP / Kinetic family deliberately stays focused on manufacturing. Common deployment scenarios are complex make-to-order with customer-specific configurations, contract manufacturing with variant BOMs, multi-stage final assembly and high-mix variant manufacturing.

Technology and deployment

The current Epicor ERP / Kinetic generation is a modern web-based application on the Microsoft .NET stack with SQL Server. The default deployment is Epicor Public Cloud on Microsoft Azure, but single-tenant cloud, private cloud and classic on-premise are all supported. Public-cloud updates ship quarterly under the “Continuous Innovation” promise. The architecture is component-based and allows phased activation of modules. Application Studio separates customer UX and process customisations cleanly from the standard, so upgrade-ability is preserved. Multi-language, multi-currency and localisations for over 40 countries (including Germany, Austria and Switzerland) are part of the standard. Integrations run through REST APIs, Epicor Service Connect or integration platforms like Boomi and Mulesoft. For smart-factory scenarios there are native IoT connectors plus integration with Microsoft Power BI.

Strengths and limitations

Strengths include the high functional maturity in manufacturing — configuration-driven order manufacturing, MES proximity, integrated quality management and a robust project-management module cover even complex requirements. The cloud architecture, the Application Studio low-code platform and the Prism AI initiative deliver a future-proof platform with a clear innovation roadmap. International groups benefit from multi-site, multi-currency and multi-language functions and country-specific localisations. Limitations are the modest DACH market visibility versus SAP S/4HANA and Microsoft Dynamics 365, and a comparatively narrow German partner ecosystem. The richness of configuration options demands experienced implementation partners; a “standard project” is rarely realistic. The UX, although web-relaunched, still feels functional in places. For small businesses below 25 employees or pure trade businesses Epicor is typically over-scoped, and some German-specific topics (DATEV integration, GoBD-compliant document handling) are addressed through certified partner solutions.

Pricing and licensing

Epicor ERP / Kinetic is marketed as a user-based subscription model. Different licence types — full user, limited user, self-service and API/integration licences — are combined depending on the requirement profile. Epicor does not publish list prices; industry observations indicate typical cloud subscriptions starting at around 175 euro per full user per month. One-time costs follow for implementation, training, integration and possibly hardware, plus optionally the AI platform Prism, which Epicor markets on an outcome-based pricing model. Indicative all-in TCO for a 50-user manufacturing deployment over five years lies between 1.5 and 5 million euro, with implementation services representing the largest share.
