Microsoft Azure Germany — Cloud regions for ERP workloads
Microsoft Azure operates several regions in Germany, with the public-cloud Germany West Central region in Frankfurt and Germany North in Berlin as the primary anchors. Azure is relevant to ERP buyers in three distinct ways. First, as the native cloud host for Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central and Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations, which run as Microsoft-managed SaaS on Azure infrastructure with Germany as one of the available customer regions. Second, as a certified hyperscaler for SAP S/4HANA Private Cloud and Rise with SAP customers who prefer Microsoft infrastructure over AWS or Google Cloud. Third, as the underlying platform for many third-party ERP products that customers or partners deploy directly on Azure virtual machines or Azure SQL services. Azure's tight integration with Microsoft 365, Entra ID, Power Platform and Teams gives Dynamics 365 customers a more cohesive identity and productivity stack than third-party ERP deployments achieve.
About
Microsoft Azure is the public-cloud division of Microsoft, headquartered in Redmond, Washington. European operations run through Microsoft Ireland Operations Limited; in Germany the customer-facing legal entity is Microsoft Deutschland GmbH in Munich. The Germany West Central region in the Frankfurt area opened in late 2019 and is the primary German region for SAP and third-party ERP workloads. Germany North in the Berlin area opened shortly afterwards as the secondary region for paired-region resilience scenarios. Both regions hold the standard European compliance certifications including BSI C5, ISO 27001, ISO 27017, ISO 27018, SOC 1 and SOC 2, and the EU Cloud Code of Conduct. The default service-level agreement for multi-zone deployments is 99.99 per cent. Microsoft additionally publishes EU Data Boundary commitments that constrain processing of customer data to EU regions for relevant Microsoft online services, including Dynamics 365.
Service offering
For ERP workloads the relevant capabilities in the German regions include SAP-certified virtual machines (M-series and Mv2-series) for SAP HANA up to multi-terabyte memory, premium SSD storage for ERP databases, Azure NetApp Files for high-performance shared storage, Azure Backup for snapshot-based protection, and Azure Site Recovery for cross-region disaster recovery. Native Microsoft ERP products are operated as SaaS: Dynamics 365 Business Central, Dynamics 365 Finance, Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management and adjacent Customer Engagement modules are provisioned through the Microsoft Cloud and run on Azure infrastructure with the customer selecting the data residency region. SAP-on-Azure reference architectures document production landscapes spanning multiple availability zones with automated failover. Azure Arc extends management to on-premises and edge environments where the customer keeps part of the ERP estate outside the public cloud.
DACH positioning
Among DACH customers Azure is the dominant hyperscaler for Dynamics 365 workloads simply because Dynamics is a Microsoft-native product whose SaaS form runs only on Azure. For SAP workloads the choice between Azure, AWS Frankfurt and Google Cloud is driven by existing strategic-supplier relationships rather than fundamental technical differences, with all three holding SAP certification. Microsoft is unusually strong in Germany on the productivity layer through Microsoft 365 and Teams, which creates pull for the broader Microsoft stack. Compliance posture covers GDPR through standard contractual clauses, BSI C5 attestation as the German cloud baseline, and the EU Data Boundary commitment for SaaS workloads. For GoBD-relevant tax data, immutability and retention controls are available on Azure storage. German-language support is available; Microsoft maintains a substantial enterprise sales and consulting presence in Munich, Cologne, Berlin and Frankfurt.
Strengths and selection considerations
Strengths to consider: native host for Dynamics 365, tight integration with Microsoft 365 identity and productivity stack, mature SAP certification, paired-region resilience between Frankfurt and Berlin, EU Data Boundary commitment. For customers running both Dynamics 365 and SAP, Azure simplifies identity federation through Entra ID. Limitations to consider: Microsoft is a U.S.-headquartered provider, which raises the same residual CLOUD Act considerations as AWS for the most regulated sectors; the previous Microsoft Cloud Germany sovereign offering with T-Systems as the data trustee was discontinued in 2018, and there is currently no German-trustee Azure variant. Customers who require a contractually sovereign EU-headquartered provider should also evaluate Open Telekom Cloud, IONOS Cloud or the upcoming Microsoft Cloud for Sovereignty offering for partial sovereignty controls.
