Frequently Asked Questions

Is Talend still open source?

Talend Open Studio, the free open-source edition of the platform, remains available and is widely used by developers and small projects. Talend has progressively reduced investment in the open-source edition relative to the commercial Talend Data Fabric and Talend Cloud offerings, particularly after the Thoma Bravo acquisition and the Qlik merger. For production enterprise use the commercial editions are the active product line; the open-source edition is positioned more as an entry point.

Can Talend extract data from SAP S/4HANA?

Yes. Talend maintains certified connectors for SAP S/4HANA, SAP ECC and adjacent SAP systems, supporting standard SAP integration patterns including OData, BAPI, IDoc and BW Open Hub. For high-volume SAP data extraction scenarios SAP's own data tooling (SAP Datasphere, SAP Data Services) may provide tighter integration; Talend is competitive when the data pipeline combines SAP with non-SAP sources or when the target platform is a hyperscaler data lake.

How does Talend differ from Boomi or MuleSoft?

The primary difference is use case. Boomi and MuleSoft are application-integration iPaaS platforms optimised for transactional flows between ERP, CRM and other operational systems (orders, invoices, master data synchronisation). Talend is a data-integration platform optimised for bulk and incremental data movement into analytics platforms (data warehouses, data lakes, BI tools). Many customers deploy both: an iPaaS for transactional integration and a data-integration platform for analytics pipelines.
