Talend — ETL and data integration for analytics on ERP data
Talend is a data-integration platform that began life in 2005 as an open-source ETL tool, grew into a commercial enterprise platform, and was acquired in 2023 by Qlik — the data-and-analytics platform operator owned by Thoma Bravo. Talend's positioning differs from the application-integration iPaaS platforms (Boomi, MuleSoft, Workato) in that its primary use case is data movement and transformation rather than transactional application-to-application integration. For ERP buyers Talend is most relevant when the customer is building a data lake, data warehouse or cloud-analytics platform that consumes ERP data alongside data from other operational systems, and needs an ETL or ELT pipeline that extracts ERP transactions, master data and reference data on a scheduled or event-driven basis. The platform integrates with SAP, Microsoft Dynamics 365, Oracle, NetSuite and dozens of other ERP and operational source systems through certified connectors.
About
Talend was founded in 2005 in Suresnes, France and grew internationally with substantial open-source community adoption of Talend Open Studio, the free open-source edition of the platform. The commercial business (Talend Data Fabric, Talend Cloud) extended the open-source core with enterprise features around data quality, data governance, scheduling, monitoring and managed cloud operations. Talend was acquired by Thoma Bravo in 2021 and then merged with Qlik (also owned by Thoma Bravo) in 2023 to form a combined data-and-analytics platform business. Headcount across the combined Qlik-Talend organisation is in the low thousands globally with offices in the United States, France, the United Kingdom, Germany and other markets. The combined platform now sits inside a broader data, analytics and AI portfolio. Compliance certifications include ISO 27001, SOC 2 and the standard set of European data-protection commitments. Talend retains a substantial European customer base from its French origins.
Service offering
The Talend platform covers four areas. First, data integration: ETL and ELT pipelines that extract data from source systems (ERP, CRM, operational databases, file systems, SaaS APIs), transform it according to defined business rules, and load it into target systems (data warehouses, data lakes, downstream applications). Second, data quality: profiling, cleansing, deduplication, standardisation and validation of data as part of the integration pipeline. Third, data governance: lineage tracking, metadata management, data-catalogue features and policy enforcement. Fourth, application integration through Talend ESB and adjacent components, although this is a smaller part of the modern portfolio than the data-integration core. Deployment models include Talend Cloud (the SaaS platform with EU-region hosting), customer-hosted on cloud or on-premises (Talend Data Fabric), and the free Talend Open Studio for technical users and developers. Connectors cover SAP S/4HANA, SAP ECC, Microsoft Dynamics 365, NetSuite, Oracle, Workday and several hundred other source and target systems.
DACH positioning
In the DACH data-integration market Talend competes against Informatica (the legacy enterprise leader), Microsoft Azure Data Factory and Fabric, AWS Glue, Snowflake's data-engineering offerings, and a substantial set of open-source and commercial alternatives. Talend's differentiators in DACH are the open-source heritage that produced a large pool of trained developers, the relatively transparent commercial model, EU-region hosting through the Talend Cloud, and the combined Qlik-Talend positioning that aligns data engineering with analytics. GDPR-compliant operation is straightforward through EU-region hosting; for GoBD-relevant ERP data extracted into a data warehouse, the customer remains responsible for audit-trail and retention configuration in the target system. German-language support and partner-led delivery are available through Talend's direct sales and a partner ecosystem of German data-engineering consultancies. For pure ERP-to-ERP transactional integration (orders, invoices, master data flows) the application-integration iPaaS platforms remain more appropriate; Talend's sweet spot is the analytics direction.
Strengths and selection considerations
Strengths to consider: deep ETL and ELT capabilities, mature data-quality features, broad connector library for ERP and operational source systems, EU-region cloud hosting, large pool of trained developers from the open-source heritage, and tighter alignment with the Qlik analytics platform under shared ownership. For customers building a data lake, data warehouse or analytics platform that consumes ERP data, Talend is a credible option. Limitations to consider: post-merger product-roadmap clarity has been variable as the Qlik and Talend platforms are aligned; customers signing multi-year contracts should validate the roadmap commitments for the specific Talend products they plan to use. For pure ERP-to-ERP transactional integration Talend is less appropriate than dedicated iPaaS platforms (Boomi, MuleSoft, Workato). For hyperscaler-native data-integration scenarios on Azure or AWS, the native services (Azure Data Factory, AWS Glue) may offer tighter integration and simpler operations. Is Talend still open source?
Talend Open Studio, the free open-source edition of the platform, remains available and is widely used by developers and small projects.
